Round 15 Round Up

Round 15 of the Betfred Super League as it happened…

There was drama on Thursday as Hull KR clinched a 12-13 victory against Castleford Tigers at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle. And there was little to separate the sides in a scintillating contest except a late Jez Litten drop goal, with two tries a piece on the night.

Sam Wood opened the scores for the hosts, before the Robins responded immediately with two quick-fire tries.

Mikey Lewis first broke the line with Tom Opacic in support to cross. Then, four minutes later, Litten also sliced through the Tigers’ defence and raced 40m before getting the pass away to Elliot Minchella.

It was 6-12 in the visitors’ favour at half-time. Castleford went on to score the only try of the second half as Rowan Milnes found a gap in the Robins’ defence to cut through and slide over – bringing the scores level.

The game continued with end-to-end action, and five minutes before the final whistle, a calm and collected Litten slotted over the match-winning one-pointer - as Willie Peters' men went on the record their fourth consecutive win and a valiant Tigers outfit were consigned to another narrow defeat.

Leeds Rhinos came out on top in what was an emotional night at AMT Headingley Stadium on Friday, as the Rhinos paid a special tribute to the late legend Rob Burrow CBE.

It was a stunning win for the home side against Leigh Leopards, with Player of the Match Brodie Croft running in two tries - including a length of the field effort.

Then, in the second half and rather fittingly, Leeds’ number 7 Matt Frawley found his way over the try-line, following a break down the left edge. This saw the Rhinos take an 18-0 lead.

Leigh did hit back with two late tries, but it was to be an unforgettable night for Leeds Rhinos (18-10).

Elsewhere on Friday, Super League Champions Wigan Warriors continued their dominance with a 36-0 home win over London Broncos, and moved up to the top spot of the Super League table.

The Warriors scored six tries, including braces from Jack Farrimond and Jake Wardle, with Farrimond maintaining a perfect record from the tee on his home debut.

Saturday Super League then saw two closely fought contests, with Hull FC and Huddersfield Giants posing a late fightback in their respective matches.

The Black & Whites managed to make a comeback from 6-18 down at the MKM Stadium to level the scores at 18-18 against Warrington Wolves. It was another valiant effort from Simon Grix’s side, but Matt Dufty’s match-winner in the final ten minutes would clinch a win for the away side (24-18).

Similarly, in Perpignan, the Giants reduced an initial 22-0 deficit to just four points, but the damage had already been done by Catalans Dragons’ tries in the first half.

The hosts racked up four tries in the first forty minutes as Tom Davies, Theo Fages, Arthur Romano, and Tom Johnstone added themselves to the scoresheet.

It was then to be a tale of two halves when Huddersfield responded through Harry Rushton on the 55th minute - the repeated pressure finally paying off for Ian Watson's men. Two further quick-fire tries would make a game of it, but the Dragons held on to come away with the two points (22-18).

Finally, Salford Red Devils claimed their first league double over St Helens since 1980 on Sunday. It was another sensational encounter between the two sides, having already produced a stunning display back in March's reverse fixture.

This time out, at the Salford Community Stadium, two Deon Cross tries were the difference at half-time as Salford took a 10-6 lead.

It wouldn't take long for Saints to hit back through Curtis Sironen, however, before the game became an enticing "you score, we score" affair. Then, six minutes from time, an incredible break triggered by Nene Macdonald would see Ethan Ryan race away and find a pass to Chris Hankinson - who touched down for the match-winning try in front of a jubliant home crowd, on a memorable afternoon (20-18).
