Play-Offs: Currie ready for a crack at glory

Ben Currie admits being named in the Betfred Super League Dream Team never loses its shine, but a second selection a decade after his first has made this latest accolade even more special.

The Warrington Wolves veteran has enjoyed an outstanding campaign in 2026, helping Sam Burgess' side secure a third-place finish and a home Play-Off Eliminator. In doing so, Currie has earned a second Dream Team berth, ten years on from his first appearance.

The longevity of his achievement is perhaps made even more remarkable by the fact he has been recognised in two different positions.

“It’s amazing. It's ten years apart since the last time I was in there," Currie said.

"Last time I was named in there was at second row and this time it’s at loose forward. It's nice to get in it for the second time, but extra nice that it’s a second position as well.”

Now in his 15th season with the Wolves, Currie has become one of the club's most respected figures, making well over 300 appearances.

“That's crept up a lot this year - the age thing. People keep saying I'm one of the older ones, one of the more senior blokes, but it is a compliment.

“I still feel young and like I’ve got many more years in me, and I’m going to try and pass on all my experience to the other players.

“It’s strange all the players I’ve seen come and go at Warrington in this time."

This leadership has been invaluable for a Wolves side that has quietly pieced together one of the most impressive campaigns in the competition this year.

Despite finishing third and boasting one of the Super League's strongest home records at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, the Wolves have often found themselves mentioned less frequently than some of the others teams around them.

Currie, however, believes that has suited his side perfectly:

“It’s perfect how we’ve stayed under the radar. I’ve turned Sky Sports on many times, and we weren't really getting the mention, but I've preferred it that way.

“It’s probably put more focus on us as a team and how we've been this year.

“We probably wouldn’t say we've got standout individuals. Obviously missing George throughout the year was tough for us and we’ve missed a lot of players, but this meant a lot of players have had to step up playing more games than they expected, but it really shows how we've gelled as a team and performed as a team.

"Hopefully, that's what you need to win trophies."

The togetherness within the squad was on full display in Round 27, as Warrington sealed third spot and the home advantage that comes with it.

Although many of the senior players sat out the final regular season fixture against Toulouse Olympique, they watched every moment from the sidelines as the younger members of the squad got the job done.

For Currie, the occasion perfectly summed up the connection running through the group:

“It was massive. I know a lot of us older boys didn't play the last game against Toulouse. But we were on the sideline watching most of it.

“The atmosphere that day was brilliant, and you should have seen it - there should have been a camera on the side showing all the senior boys.

“We were loving it. It just shows how connected we are. A lot of them players, even though they are much younger, have played a lot of games. It's great for the club.

Now their attention turns to Saturday's highly anticipated Eliminator against Hull KR, who are the reigning champions and a side with whom Warrington have forged a fierce rivalry in recent seasons.

From the 2025 Challenge Cup Final to fiercely contested league encounters and previous Play-Off meetings, there is little these two teams do not know about each other.

But Currie is under no illusions about the magnitude of the challenge awaiting the Wolves.

“They’re the champions and they’re going to be a dangerous side. I know they finished in sixth spot in the end, but they are a champion side. They've been there and won it, which is something we've not done as a club ourselves.

"It's going to be a massive challenge.

“We've had quite a few battles over recent years, the Challenge Cup Final, Play-Offs as well, and obviously league matches this season. We've played quite a few times over recent years, so I'm sure we know what to expect from them.

“And I'm sure they know what to expect from us, so it'll be a real classic.”

For all the outside discussion that inevitably surrounds Warrington at this time of year, Currie insists the focus remains firmly internal.

And the Wolves' number 13 does believe this group has the mentality and unity required to make a genuine push for Grand Final glory in 2026.

“We like to shut the outside noise down. Every year, obviously fans like to sing that song about us - that happens every year.

“But I'm pretty sure it'll happen one year for the club. I've never been in doubt. When it'll be. Who knows?

"We're a really bonded team, and we're ready to give it a crack this year.

“Obviously finishing third, we've given ourselves an opportunity. That's how we like to speak of it. But we still got to go and take the opportunity.”

The Halliwell Jones Stadium has become a fortress throughout the campaign, and will once again provide a platform for the Wolves to launch their Play-Off challenge on Saturday evening...

“I think our home record has been massive this year - only losing one game. It’s been really entertaining. I ask all the fans to turn up and join us for the Play-Off rollercoaster!”

And while the immediate focus is on overcoming Hull KR and securing a spot in the Semi-Finals, Currie's ultimate motivation remains the same as it has been ever since he first pulled on a Warrington Wolves shirt.

After 15 years of service and counting, there is still one dream left to fulfil.

“It’s what you dream of as a kid. I've been here 15 years at Warrington, and I've not managed to do it yet.

"I've said many times, I won't be satisfied at this club until I do win that trophy.

“I'll be giving it my all and I know the lads will as well.”
