Round 25 Play-Off Permutations

Leeds Rhinos remain top of the Betfred Super League heading into Round 25, despite being knocked off the summit for two days by Wigan Warriors after their Round 24 victory over Wakefield Trinity on Friday.

Rhinos fans needn’t have worried, though, as a ruthless 16-66 victory over York Knights on the Sunday sent Leeds straight back to the top of the pile. And if their points difference wasn’t already superior, it certainly is now, with Leeds holding a +192 advantage over Wigan.

That said, the League Leaders’ Shield race remains wide open. The Rhinos and the Warriors are locked together on 38 league points, with the two sides still set to face each other in Round 26.

Round 24 also saw Warrington Wolves secure their place in the Play-Offs, becoming the third team to do so, while Wakefield Trinity were forced to wait another week for confirmation after suffering another disappointing defeat.

St Helens, meanwhile, live to fight another day. Their latest victory from a fiery exchange with Castleford Tigers kept their top six hopes alive, and Eamon O’Carroll’s side will have been further motivated by Hull KR’s back-to-back losses this week.

What are the implications in Round 25?

Once again, Trinity have the chance to secure their Play-Off spot with a win - but only if Saints lose or fail to win as well. Trinity could also draw and Saints lose and still qualify.

The Red V will host the Rhinos in a crucial clash this Friday Night.

Likewise, Leigh Leopards can also ensure their Play-Off place, but they must win or avoid losing to Huddersfield Giants and rely on St Helens dropping the two points.

If Saints win again, both Trinity and the Leopards will have to wait another week to confirm their spots, which would be the round where Leigh face St Helens at home! Interesting!

However, both sides are now nearly guaranteed a Play-Off place, with their humongous points differences making it extremely unlikely they will miss out - although, technically, anything is still possible.

Both currently have 32 league points and Saints have 28, with six left to play for - and because of this, the door remains mathematically open for Saints.

Meanwhile, Wolves will be looking to further consolidate their position in third while keeping tabs on the top two - an incentive which comes with an attractive home Semi-Final fixture.

Sam Burgess’ men will go searching for a valuable two points in West Hull when they take on the Black & Whites on Saturday.

At present, it’s looking like a battle between Wakefield and a red-hot Leigh for fourth place, which of course, would mean an important home Eliminator tie.

Trinity will be hoping they can pick up a home victory against York Knights at the weekend, which would boost their confidence massively.

The Robins, who have dropped to sixth, are now in real danger, with Saints breathing down their necks and the Leopards coming good at the right time and leapfrogging them in the table.

The champions travel to Wigan in Round 24 and can ill afford to suffer another defeat. If they do, and Saints win, the two sides would go level on 30 points. It’s a must-win for Willie Peters’ men, but how will they fare at The Brick Community Stadium?
