The Warriors, who had already beaten St Helens at Wembley Stadium in June to lift the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup and added the League Leaders’ Shield for finishing top of the Super League table, overturned an 8-4 half-time deficit with Eva Hunter, Molly Jones and Anna Davies inspiring a stunning spell of three tries in eight minutes.
Even then Saints showed the champion qualities that have made them such a strong force in Women’s Rugby League throughout the Super League era, reducing the deficit to four points through an improbable Phoebe Hook finish for her second try, and ensuring some more nervous moments for a Grand Final record 5,018 crowd.
But Wigan held on to secure their first Super League title since 2018 by four tries to three in a match without a single successful conversion, and ensure a fitting finish to the distinguished career of their co-captain Vicky Molyneux who had already confirmed that she would be retiring after the match.
“It’s a fairytale, isn’t it?” said Molyneux, now 37, who was a member of the first England Women’s team of the modern era in 2007, and has made a remarkable return to the top level in recent years after taking a break for the birth of her daughter, now 10.
“When you’ve put your body on the line for so long, I just wanted one trophy this year. At the start of the year I don’t think any of us would have thought we’d be sweeping up. I think this is just the start as well – I’m glad I’ve played a small part in it.”
“I’m in awe of Vic, of what she’s done and where she’s been,” said Denis Betts, the Wigan playing legend who has taken over as coach of the Women’s team for the last two seasons.
“It’s inspirational to be around her and all of the girls. It’s just so different and so joyous. They love this more than you can imagine.”
Wigan took the lead with the first of two tries for Davies, the powerful right wing who switched codes through her teaching career, but Saints responded impressively, led as ever by the tireless England captain Jodie Cunningham.
The Wales winger Dani McGifford squeezed in at the left corner for an equalising try, then Hook finished superbly on the right to establish their half-time advantage.
But Wigan were unstoppable in that second half period, with the record-breaking second-row Hunter doing much of the early damage for Jones to cross twice in the space of four minutes on the left, and Davies to round off a superb handling move for her second.
Congratulations, @WiganWarriorsRL ??
