Round 24 Round Up

The Final Charge is heating up – and here’s what happened in Round 24!

On Thursday night, Leigh Leopards recorded a 46-6 victory over Castleford Tigers to book their place in the Play-Offs.

Tries from Frankie Halton, Lachlan Lam, Keanan Brand and Josh Charnley put the hosts well out of sight of a sorry Tigers side at half-time.

Braces from Alec Tuitavake and Brad Dwyer after the break ensured the scoreline was even more one-sided, with Brand also completing his double.

The Leopards have climbed up to the fourth.

Friday Night saw a pulsating contest unfold between league leaders Hull KR and St Helens.

It was a fiercely low-scoring affair at Sewell Group Craven Park, with the score just 2-2 heading into the break.

Rhyse Martin initially added two points for the Robins, while Mark Percival’s penalty had levelled things back up.

Three further Martin penalties then took the hosts six points clear, before Mikey Lewis’ pass sent Joe Burgess in at the corner to make it 12-2 and proving to be enough on the night.

Deon Cross added a late try for Saints, but time was against the Red V (12-8).

Willie Peters’ men now sit four points clear at the top of the Betfred Super League and could wrap up the League Leaders’ Shield next Sunday – against their nearest and dearest Hull FC in Rivals Round Returns.

Then, it was an evening of pure emotion for Salford Red Devils, as they stunned Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, and secured their third win of the season with a sensational team performance.

Matt Dufty had opened the scores for Wire, but efforts from Jack Darbyshire and Justin Sangare put the visitors 6-12 up.

The hosts bit back early in the second stanza, but Salford’s spirit never died as Sangare crossed for his second following a truly superb build-up.

The Red Devils ensured a strong defensive performance throughout, before Tiaki Chan then pulled Salford away and sent the away crowd into raptures, before Rowan Milnes' drop-goal sealed an emotional and morale-boosting victory after a terribly tough season both on and off the field (12-25).

There was triple the action on Saturday, starting with a lovely Leeds Rhinos win at the MKM Stadium (0-34).

The Rhinos’ roll is unstoppable at present as they ran riot against Hull FC, scoring six tries and keeping their opponents to nil.

Ryan Hall touched down for Leeds on his 400th Super League appearance, before an equally as experienced Kallum Watkins crossed the whitewash to extend their lead.

Jake Connor raced away to score following an well-read interception, and Morgan Gannon’s effort meant Leeds led 24-0 at the interval.

Brodie Croft and James McDonnell added further gloss to their huge win in West Hull, which moved the Rhinos up to third and confirmed their spot in the Play-Offs.

A Rhinos victory also ensured that St Helens will feature in the Play-Offs despite their loss on Friday Night, which means there is just one more place up for grabs…

Meanwhile, the Black & Whites slipped into seventh following their heavy beating and Wakefield Trinity’s thrashing of Huddersfield Giants.

Trinity returned to winning ways at the weekend after two disappointing defeats, and in turn moved into the top six.

It was a compelling victory on home soil, as Daryl Powell’s side posted 48 points on their West Yorkshire rivals.

Matty Russell banked a try at opposite ends of the game, starring on his return to action.

Caius Faatili, Harvey Smith, Seth Nikotemo, Jake Trueman, Renouf Atoni and Josh Rourke were all on the scoresheet in their Round 24 rout of the Giants (48-2).

The round then concluded with another dominant Wigan Warriors performance.

The champions kept their pursuit of the League Leaders’ Shield alive as they put Catalans Dragons to the sword in the south of France.

The hosts struggled to contain the likes of Bevan French, who scored two tries and assisted three, as well as Liam Marshall who bagged a hat-trick and two-try scorer Zach Eckersley (4-40).
