The Famous Farrell

Loyal Liam Farrell is Wigan Warriors through and through. And if you were to cut him open, he may just bleed Cherry & White.

The Warriors captain is a one-club man and one of the most decorated players in Rugby League, having won everything there is to win on offer - but he is still hungry for more.

Farrell’s raft of silverware includes six Super League Grand Finals, five League Leaders’ Shields, four Challenge Cups and two World Club Challenges, as well as a long list of individual honours.

And who can ever forget the Warriors’ historic quadruple in 2024? Farrell played a pivotal role in the Wigan team who completed the entire set – a formidable first in the modern Super League era.

Even Farrell, who has enjoyed a stellar career with the current Champions since 2010, didn’t initially believe was possible:

“I didn’t think it was achievable, to be honest,” the skipper admitted. “I didn’t think a team could win all four trophies just because of how our season schedule is.

“But it’s a massive credit to Matt [Peet] who has been able to put a great squad together – we’re a mix of youth, big overseas, and experience – and there is so much competition for places.

“The season wasn’t perfect, but in the games where we struggled, we still managed to pick up wins.

“We’ve learnt a lot and developed, and it turned out to be a fantastic year and one that probably couldn’t have gotten much better!

“We played well last year and we won’t forget that, but there are always things we can learn from.

“We spoke about winning the Grand Final, and that if we did that then we could enjoy the off-season and reflect on what’s been such a good year.”

Winning the lot doesn't mean Wigan are prepared to take their eye off the ball, however, and according to Farrell, the 'Kings of Rugby' are never going to stop, and are more than motivated for another successful year:

“We’ve had some time now to look back, sit down and reflect on what we’ve achieved and what we set out to do twelve months ago.

“We’ve come back in and we’re still speaking about things that happened last year. We won’t forget 2024 – instead we’ll just build on it.

“We enjoy the wins and that feeling of wanting to win refreshes itself, and you start thinking about what you want to achieve.

“I think the hunger definitely comes within and when you start to see everyone training hard on the field again, it’s clear that people want to win and achieve more things.

“The year has come around quick but it’s something that we’re excited about - being part of this team at the moment – we enjoy our time together.

“It’s been very successful on the field, but off the field we enjoy being around each other as well. We’re just enjoying what we’re doing at the moment.”

Farrell hopes he can continue to lead his Warriors team through this dominant period, and recently signed a two-year contract extension, which keeps him at his beloved club until the end of the 2027 season.

And the 34-year-old veteran shows no signs of slowing down any time soon:

“I’d like to keep playing for as long as possible. I’m in a good position physically and I’m still loving my Rugby League. I enjoy the tough parts, like pre-season.

“If the body ever gave up on me, then obviously it would be time to give it up, but at the moment I’m still enjoying it.

“The ultimate for me is to be at Wigan for my full career. And for now, I’m looking forward to the 2025 season and hopefully we can have some more success there.”
