Man of Steel Contenders: Marc Sneyd

2 Oct 2024

Marc Sneyd has enjoyed a stellar season for Salford Red Devils, and the number seven has been at his very best with both ball in hand, and from his magical left foot.

Since rejoining the Red Devils in 2021 the scrum-half has proven age is just a number having picked up five consecutive Player of the Match medals earlier this year (nine in total) and a Super League Player of the Month award in March. Just two months later, Salford’s Mr. Reliable was rewarded with a two-year contract extension with his new deal meaning he will have spent nearly a decade of his illustrious career at the club.

The 33-year-old is arguably one of the best kickers to ever grace Super League, topping the 2024 goal scoring chart with 99 points. It’s not just goals that his kicking benefits either, Sneyd has assisted 16 tries from the boot and has made the most kicking meters per game this season (500).

The former England international also created history by overtaking the legendary Steve Blakeley to become Salford’s all-time top points scorer in the Super League era (625) and was a key part of Paul Rowley’s side securing a top four finish this season.

Sneyd’s class constantly shines through and he’s also a fearless leader who is well equipped at taking the line on and doing the tough stuff in defence – could his years of tireless hard work finally be rewarded?

Should he be crowned the 2024 Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel, Sneyd would be the third Salford Red Devils player to win the award, joining Brodie Croft (2022) and Jackson Hastings (2019).

A standout performer in this year’s Super League, Sneyd also debuted in the 2024 Dream Team, alongside his teammate Nene Macdonald.

On playing with Sneyd for the Red Devils, Macdonald commented:

“He’s been awesome. I think his kicking game is amazing and that’s been massive for us this season. Especially for me chasing kicks, I know he’s going to get that ball where I want it, and I think he’s steering the sheep and telling us where to go and what to do.

“You can’t fault him from Round One. He’s walked into the Dream Team this year and would be a well deserving Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel winner.”

Sneyd topped the MOS board at the end of the final round of published votes, but has he gone all the way?

The winner of the 2024 Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel will be announced on Tuesday 8 October at Royal Armouries, Leeds at Rugby League's biggest and most inclusive Awards Night - when the winners of more than a dozen other awards will also be celebrated, including the 2024 Woman of Steel, and Wheels of Steel as the year's outstanding player in Wheelchair Rugby League.
